Clean Power with Batteries
Hosted by Tony Berg
This SATE session delves into two decades of technological progress, illustrating how lithium-ion batteries have become instrumental in powering almost everything we now take for granted, including the growing number of electric cars on today’s roads. Going beyond the familiar realm of lithium-ion, the discussion explores potential replacements or additions, ushering in a new era of energy storage possibilities.
Despite the technical nature of the exploration, the session maintains a focus on the practical aspects that define a battery’s utility—rechargeability, current draw, charging speed, and recyclability. Furthermore, the discussion introduces a sense of optimism, drawing parallels with historical challenges and highlighting the potential of technology to address complex issues.
Below are Tony’s slides:

ElliQ – The A.I. Companion
Hosted by Barry Sardis
I connected with Intuition Robotics (IR) shortly after its inaugural public event at the beginning of 2017 and I arranged for some presentations of a prototype ElliQ by a local IR employee at the Villages.
My wife and I were the first people outside the company to have one in our home. Note the wooden box below the device containing the early electronics.
I attended CES 2018 and was invited to meet with CEO Dor Skuler and two other founders in the IR hotel suite.
Six Years Later
The New York State Office For Older Adults (NYSOFA) description of the recorded event held on December 4, 2023:
NYSOFA and Intuition Robotics recently grabbed headlines worldwide for their successful partnership providing ElliQ, an A.I. companionship tool, to older adults in New York State. In this edition of Live with Greg, NYSOFA Director Greg Olsen talks with Dor Skuler, CEO and Co-Founder of Intuition Robotics. They’ll demonstrate ElliQ, how it works, share data outcomes on reducing social isolation, discuss new features of ElliQ, and other ways that A.I. is transforming the aging services field.

SpaceX’s StarLink Satellite-Based Internet Service
Hosted by John Trudeau
John Trudeau presented a look into the technologies behind SpaceX’s StarLink satellite-based internet service. Presented were the components of the local, home-based antenna dishes and how they work using phased-array transmissions to communicate with an available one of the thousands of satellites that make up the StarLink network.
Also presented was how the satellites work and how data is compressed to improve communications efficiency — specifically, describing how JPEG image compression works. This was a great look at some of the technologies behind an amazing technology in itself – satellite internet.

Artificial Intelligence is Remaking Our World
Hosted by Barry Sardis
Past attendees are familiar with the subject matter expert panelists discussions on emerging technologies in videos from CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show.
This similar type of discussion is an introduction to a treasure trove of videos from the Computer History Museum, abbreviated as CHM.
The history of this one, a part of a long-running PBS series called Revolutionaries, is that it was filmed in late 2015. This was almost eight years before the launch of ChatGPT which began the next chapter in the evolution of Artificial Intelligence.
Many of you may know of my affinity for social robots, and this video got me started after watching it in April 2016. The robot discussed, named Jibo, was featured on the cover of Time magazine’s 25 Best Inventions of 2017 but failed to succeed as a business.
Dr. Eric Horvitz, is a Distinguished Scientist and Managing Director of Microsoft Research. He funded a century-long study of the effects of artificial intelligence on society: the Stanford 100 Year Study of AI, or AI100.
Cynthia Breazeal is a professor of media arts and sciences at MIT, where she founded and directs the Personal Robots group at the Media Lab. She is the MIT dean for digital learning. She is also the Director of the MIT-wide Initiative on Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education.

Cybersecurity 2023
Hosted by John Trudeau
This meeting features a CES (Consumer Electronics Show) panel discussion with two top experts in the field – Jen Easterly is director of CISA, and George Kurtz is CEO of CrowdStrike, both are very impressive. After the showing was a spirited discussion by attendees and John.

ChatGPT Made Easy
By Tony Berg
This meeting features two YouTube videos along with additional commentary by Tony. Unfortunately, due to a minor issue, the recording of the meeting, just below, begins after Tony’s introductory comments.
Barry Sardis added a reference to a very useful “prompt”, after the Q&A was complete. It comes from another YouTube video (click/tap the link in the name of the video below):
I want you to become my prompt engineer. Your goal is to help me craft the best possible prompt for my needs. The prompt will be used by you, ChatGPT. You will follow the following process:
The ONE ChatGPT Prompt to Rule Them All
- Your first response will be to ask me what the prompt should be about. I will provide my answer, but we will need to improve it through continual iterations by going through the next steps.
- Based on my input, you will generate 2 sections a) Revised prompt (provide your rewritten prompt. It should be clear, concise, and easily understood by you), b) Questions (ask any relevant questions pertaining to what additional information is needed from me to improve the prompt).
- We will continue to this iterative process with me additional information to you and you updating the Revised prompt section until I say we are done.
You may review the two YouTube videos from the meeting if desired:

The Promise of Fusion Energy
By John Trudeau
The nuclear fusion breakthrough reported on December 5, 2022 by the Lawrence Livermore National Lab is very exciting!
Nuclear fusion is what powers the sun and, if we can make it work here on Earth, it would be a limitless and virtually pollution-free source of energy for all humankind. In this session we look into the science behind fusion energy and talk about why making it a commercial energy source is such a difficult goal to achieve.
Research into commercial fusion power has been going on since the 1970’s and we examine the recent advances in the development of controlled fusion energy, and the current global activities working to make it a practical power source.

Gmail – Friend or Foe?
By Tony Berg
Most of us cannot live without it these days, but if you have ever just had an email miraculously disappear just as you finished composing it or cannot find one that you KNOW you kept in your Inbox, you can also find it frustrating as all get-out.
But the more you know, the better your relationship with this miraculous tool will be and the fewer love-it-or-hate moments you will have. This meeting was a brush-up session on the most popular email system in use today. With a little planning and organizing the plea ‘I can’t find that message’ might become a thing of the past.
