The subject of this month’s meeting was the Antikythera Mechanism, which has been called the “World’s First Computer”. This topic was prompted by this March 2021 article (which includes the video that was shown in the meeting and can be viewed by clicking the large image below) reporting on the most recent discoveries of the ongoing 120-year research into this magnificent, ancient, device.

Mountain View’s Computer History Museum‘s (CHM) exhibition name “Revolution, The First 2000 Years of Computing” comes from this mechanism. In 2015 CHM put on two Antikythera Mechanism events.

The first one featured 6 people involved in various investigations including one that participated in the 2014 diving exploration of the shipwreck site where the mechanism was found in 1901. You can view this event on YouTube.

The second one was with two people who figure prominently in the recent revelations that were the subject of this Technology Explorers meeting. You can also view this event on YouTube.

CHM is a fabulous museum in our own backyard and its website, used by researchers around the world, contains the ability to visit the museum virtually. On a computer, this link will take you to CHM’s Antikythera Mechanism exhibit. In the lower-left there is a control:

Click the button to start the narration, then click the “Show Image” that appears just to the right of the button. You may be able to “visit” this exhibit in other ways with different devices through an app.
